Sublunary-superlunary

An original sound composition and video installation by Federico Pozuelo and Javier Ruiz del Río.

Adapting the methods of early filmmaking, this project dwells in experiences of self-estrangement, making use of sound and image developed in a somewhat autonomous fashion. As a sound piece, Sublunary-superlunary moves between the superficiality of French incidental music—the background of low-quality internet content—and the demandingness of sonic art. To achieve this effect, Pozuelo and Ruiz del Río resorted to iterative spatial re-amplification, transforming what were pandering scores into a shilling cascade of spectral waves.

The companion video piece, displayed in the event’s aftermath, takes place in Docks Dora (Turin), one of the industrial spaces where these sonic actions occurred. Taken together, the composition and video-installation hope to explore how today, in an era marked by the collapse of shared references, one is forced to develop rhetorical or aesthetic patch-ups to keep things hanging together.

This act directs our eyes to the walls that contain us, to our need to find a place and the drive, having found a hidden door, to go through and out. The title is inspired by a passage from Samuel Beckett’s Mercier & Camier, where readers follow the duo as they attempt to leave town. Like the endless obstacles and distractions that slow these characters in their escape, constantly throwing them off course in an ever-thickening fog, Salaün presents the spectator with things moved and gone that, at the same time, remain stuck to their surroundings. Visitors will be able to catch sight of these scenes before and after the performance.
